Internet in Andorra: roaming, SIM cards and eSIMs

QUICK ANSWER

To get internet in Andorra, first check whether your mobile plan explicitly includes the country. If it does not, compare a roaming add-on with a SIM or eSIM that covers Andorra. A plan labelled “Europe” is not enough to confirm coverage.

It can happen quietly: you cross the border, your phone joins another network and an app keeps using data. Sort out your connection before travelling so you can use maps, contact your accommodation and open your bookings without an unwelcome bill.

Does my plan include roaming in Andorra?

Andorra is not automatically covered by the European roaming regime. Some providers include it in selected plans; others charge for usage or offer an add-on. Your contract's country list and terms are what matter, even when you are simply driving across from Spain or France.

Look up “Andorra” in your provider's app and check data, outgoing calls, incoming calls and texts separately. Also ask when a daily allowance starts and expires: a charge per day does not necessarily buy 24 hours from activation.

  • Save a screenshot of your plan's terms.
  • Switch off data roaming on your usual line before the border if it is not included.
  • Do not confuse an internet call with a standard phone call.
  • Read the welcome text before switching data back on.

Physical SIM or eSIM: which should you choose?

An eSIM saves swapping a card, but you need a compatible model and an unlocked phone. Check the exact model, including its regional version, and whether it can keep two lines active. If it is not compatible, a physical SIM or your provider's roaming add-on may be simpler.

Andorra Telecom's tourist eSIM is a data plan for use in Andorra, without standard calls or texts. Its validity starts when it first connects to the local network. Compare alternatives too, but always check the country, validity period, data allowance and tethering rules.

How to use two lines without charging the wrong one

Give your lines clear names, such as “Home” and “Andorra”, and select your travel line for mobile data. Disable automatic data switching between SIMs. Follow the eSIM provider's instructions for its roaming setting: different products work differently.

Keeping your home line active does not make calls free. If you need banking verification texts, check the SMS terms and keep that line on only when needed. Messaging apps can usually retain your usual number; using a different data connection does not require a new WhatsApp number.

  • Download maps, tickets and your accommodation address before leaving.
  • Pause cloud backups and updates over mobile data.
  • Keep enough battery to access essential information.
  • Switch your data connection back to your home line after the trip.

Wi-Fi at your accommodation and on the slopes: keep a backup

Wi-Fi may be enough for a short break if you only need to check bookings in the evening. For navigation, work or finding your group during the day, your own data connection is more practical. Use the hotel Wi-Fi to plan the next day and download maps, with mobile data for navigation while you are out.

In the mountains, do not expect continuous reception on every route. Keep essential information offline and agree a meeting point. For remote work or video calls, prioritise a stable connection and keep mobile data as a backup.

  • Offline maps and bookings reduce reliance on reception.
  • Use Wi-Fi for large downloads.
  • Avoid entering sensitive information on unfamiliar public networks.
  • Check your remaining allowance and plan expiry during the trip.
