Where to stay in Tenerife in winter: north or south?
This guide includes affiliate links.
In Tenerife, you can have breakfast beside the Atlantic, spend the morning among gardens and end the day in a historic city. But not every base suits the same holiday. Choosing where to stay in Tenerife in winter starts with deciding how much time you want by the sea and how much of the island you intend to explore.
For a stay built around beaches, outdoor cafés and relaxation, start by comparing the south. For towns, green landscapes and cultural visits, include Puerto de la Cruz and La Laguna. The best hotel is the one that fits that holiday, not necessarily the first result in an island-wide list.

Tenerife in winter: stay in the north or the south?
The south has more sunshine over the year, while the north receives more rain and humidity. That is useful when choosing a base, not a promise of clear skies every day. Nor does it rule out the north in winter: its scenery, towns and style of travel might be exactly what you want.
Choose the south if you want to step out of your hotel and spend much of the holiday along the coast. Choose the north for Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, La Laguna and other visits without making each one an excursion from the opposite end of the island. Seaside temperatures do not describe conditions on Teide or in higher areas.
| Base | Particularly suited to | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Costa Adeje | Hotels, seafront walks and relaxing by the sea | The exact location changes how easily you can walk out |
| Los Cristianos | A coastal base with services and car-free plans | Compare the centre with streets climbing inland |
| Puerto de la Cruz | A coastal town, gardens and northern visits | The centre, Martiánez and elevated areas differ |
| La Laguna | Heritage, food and cultural short breaks | An inland city base, not a beach destination |
| Los Gigantes | Cliff scenery and a holiday focused on the west | Consider hills and transfers without a car |
Before opening twenty hotel pages, select two areas that fit your holiday. Enter the same dates and party size and compare the final total. That shows whether a price difference is worthwhile for location, space or facilities, rather than comparing hotels designed for very different trips.

Costa Adeje: hotels and relaxation beside the seafront
Costa Adeje is a natural starting point for a winter holiday of hotel time, seafront walks and coastal days mixed with a few excursions. You can enjoy the stay without planning a new attraction every morning, keeping longer journeys for two or three particular days.
Within the area, do not compare every property as though it were on the same street. Relate the address to the stretch of seafront you like and the restaurants you would walk to. A hotel higher up can offer good views while also involving slopes that do not appear in a pool photograph.
For a high-end stay beside Playa del Duque, Bahía del Duque is one option to consider. It makes sense when the hotel is an important part of your holiday and you will enjoy its setting, rather than simply using it as a bed before heading out early each morning.

Comparing a coastal hotel for winter
If the pool matters to your choice, look at which pool is heated and what the rate includes. A room-only booking differs from a stay with particular meals or additional services. This specific comparison is more useful than choosing by a general “resort” label.
For a week with several excursions, work out how many meals you will actually eat at the hotel before paying for a full meal plan. If you prefer spending most of the holiday at the property, the calculation changes: communal spaces, dining and location deserve more of the budget.
Los Cristianos: a practical base without a car
Los Cristianos deserves its own search if you want accommodation, walks and everyday services in a coastal town. It can suit travellers who prefer an apartment and choosing where to eat, or those booking a few excursions rather than driving throughout the stay.
The precise location matters particularly without a car. Compare the walk to places you will use and the actual distance to activity collection points. A product with transfers from “the south” does not necessarily collect at the door of every apartment.
Start by searching apartments and hotels with the map open, not simply sorting by price. A cheaper property farther out can still make sense for extra space on a longer stay; for a short break, you may prefer fewer journeys and the seafront close at hand.
Puerto de la Cruz: a northern base with coastal-town life
Puerto de la Cruz suits a holiday where town walks, food and exploring the north matter as much as the hotel. Do not book expecting an exact copy of Costa Adeje: the appeal lies in its streets, squares and setting, with different ways to spend each day.
First decide between the centre and a higher location. In the centre you can walk out and return between visits; in elevated areas the journey back may involve a substantial climb. With a pushchair, limited mobility or no car, that difference matters more than a short distance measured in a straight line.
Hotel Monopol, on Calle Quintana, is an option to compare if you want to prioritise the town centre and walking out. Its proposition differs from a large coastal complex: consider it as a base for enjoying Puerto de la Cruz.

From a northern base, group nearby visits together: one day for Puerto itself and another for La Orotava, for example. Avoid filling every day with a trip south followed by another back north. Fewer kilometres leave more time to browse, sit down to lunch or change plans without feeling rushed.

La Laguna: heritage, cafés and streets made for wandering
If your trip revolves around culture, food and city walks, include La Laguna before deciding you must stay beside a beach. It can work as the base for a short break or the second stop in a week combining the south and north.
The atmosphere encourages afternoons around the historic centre, without driving after every dinner. Choose it to enjoy the city and explore nearby, not to wake up and walk to the sea. That distinction helps avoid booking an attractive location for the wrong kind of holiday.
La Laguna Gran Hotel offers a stay connected to the historic centre in a characterful building. It can suit travellers who enjoy the accommodation as part of the break, alternating sightseeing with time to relax in the city.

Los Gigantes and the west: fewer changes of scene
The Los Gigantes area appeals for its cliffs and the chance to focus more days on the west. Include it if that matches your holiday: coast, viewpoints and particular outings, without an obligation to cover all of Tenerife in one week.
When comparing accommodation, look at hills and the route to services, especially without a hire car. A terrace with a view can be an excellent reason to stay, but does not automatically make the location convenient for every journey.
If you want to visit somewhere different each day, compare this area with Costa Adeje or a split stay. If your aim is rest and one or two outings, you do not need to choose your base around a full island circuit you may never make.
Choosing accommodation as a couple, with children or for a longer stay
Couples: a characterful hotel or a resort holiday
For seaside relaxation, compare Costa Adeje and the west. For dinners and city visits, consider Puerto de la Cruz or La Laguna. Choose the kind of experience before filtering by stars: a city hotel and a coastal complex can be excellent for different trips.
Families: space and straightforward journeys
An apartment provides a kitchen and somewhere to relax beyond a single bedroom; a hotel can simplify meals and services. Compare beds, bedrooms and children’s ages when entering your party. For beach days, shorten the route to the seafront rather than adding transfers every day.
Longer stays or remote work: somewhere you will enjoy living
For a longer stay, consider daily life too: grocery shopping, a nearby walk and room to separate work from rest if needed. The best base is not always the one that lets you see the most in a day. It may be the one where you can enjoy a week without packing a day bag every morning.
One base or two hotels for a week?
For four or five nights, one base usually simplifies the trip. With a week and an appetite for varied scenery, consider a southern stay and a northern stay. Moving hotels takes time: packing, checking out and arranging the next arrival.
Split the stay only if it improves several days, not to avoid a single journey. The south can group together coastal days while the north serves city and nature visits. Teide deserves its own day and a flexible plan, not an improvised stop between hotels with a full car.
To organise the days without repeating accommodation advice, see our seven-day Tenerife winter itinerary. This guide helps you choose where to sleep; that one arranges the visits and alternatives if the weather changes.
Airports, car hire and public transport: choose for the whole trip
Check whether your booking arrives at Tenerife South or Tenerife North before comparing transfers. An apparently cheaper flight can change the time and cost of reaching your hotel. Relate your return flight time to your final night too.
For a coastal stay with a few excursions, combine buses, transfers and activities with collection. A car adds flexibility for linking towns and setting your own schedule. Do not hire one by habit only to leave it parked all week, but do not design a road trip assuming every bus connection will be direct either.
If driving, decide where to collect and return the car and whether you need parking at your accommodation. When comparing cover, distinguish the included insurance, excess and deposit blocked by the rental company. That makes the booking price relevant to the whole trip.

Comparing Tenerife hotels without chasing unrealistic prices
Use the same dates, party size and cancellation conditions. Then compare the total cost with meals, parking and services you will use. We do not publish “from” prices that may never appear for your dates or promise that the north is always cheaper than the south.
For Christmas, New Year or school holidays, try alternative arrival dates if you have flexibility. If the stay still depends on flights or other travellers, consider the value of a flexible rate. Each hotel button lets you check availability for your trip rather than an invented offer fixed in the article.
Mobile data for maps, buses and bookings
Save your hotel address, excursion collection points and an offline map. If your mobile plan does not cover Spain or you need additional data, a travel eSIM can help you organise things from arrival. If you already have enough roaming, check what is included before adding another plan.
Frequently asked questions about where to stay in Tenerife in winter
Is northern or southern Tenerife better in winter?
The south particularly suits coastal holidays and hotel time; the north suits towns, gardens and cultural visits. The south has more sunshine over the year, but no base guarantees good weather every day.
Where should I stay in Tenerife without a car?
Compare well-located accommodation in Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje or Puerto de la Cruz according to your holiday. Relate the hotel to buses and excursion collection points. La Laguna can suit a mainly cultural stay.
Is Puerto de la Cruz a good winter base?
Yes, for enjoying a coastal town and visiting the north. Choose between the centre and higher areas according to how you will get around. It offers a different holiday from a southern resort.
Is changing hotels worthwhile during a week?
It can be if you want several days in both the south and north. For just one or two excursions, a single base saves packing and check-in and check-out time.
Can I combine the beach and Teide from the same hotel?
Yes, treating the park as its own day and following access rules and conditions. Coastal temperatures do not describe the mountain. Visiting the surrounding park, using the cable car and reaching the summit are different plans.
