Pet-Friendly Accommodation in the Azores: Travelling with a Dog

QUICK ANSWER

It is possible to travel to the Azores with a dog or cat and find genuinely pet-friendly accommodation, but a “pet-friendly” label never replaces the property's own rules. In restaurants, shops and other enclosed spaces, entry depends on express authorisation from the person in charge, shown by a visible sign at the entrance. To fly with SATA, transport of the animal must be requested in advance and is subject to the type of aircraft, container and weight.

A trip with a pet to the Azores works best when accommodation, meals and local transport are confirmed before booking. This guide explains what Portuguese law really allows, which questions to ask the accommodation and how to prepare inter-island flights without confusing national rules with international travel.

How pet-friendly accommodation works in the Azores

Not all hotels, houses or apartments are pet-friendly, and two listings with the same filter may apply very different rules. Some limit the weight or number of animals; others charge a cleaning fee, ask for a deposit or do not allow the animal to be left alone in the room.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What species, size and number of animals are accepted?
  • Is there a supplement, deposit or cleaning fee?
  • Can the animal be left alone in the accommodation and for how long?
  • Are there prohibited areas, such as the swimming pool, communal garden or breakfast room?
  • Is there a fenced outdoor space or just an open garden?
  • Are the conditions included in the booking confirmation?

If any of these answers could make or break your trip, ask for confirmation in writing before paying. A photo with grass or the word “family friendly” does not prove that the property is pet-friendly.

FURNAS · SÃO MIGUEL

Octant Furnas

Alongside pet-friendly houses and apartments, this hotel in Furnas publishes a pet-friendly programme. It is an option to check if you prefer a hotel while exploring the valley with your dog, provided its rules suit your pet.

Plan your stay: The pet-friendly programme has a supplement and limited availability. Give your dog’s weight and the number of pets to confirm acceptance, permitted areas and whether your dog can stay alone in the room.

PONTA DELGADA · SÃO MIGUEL

Octant Ponta Delgada

If you prefer a town base for an Azores holiday with your dog, Octant Ponta Delgada also publishes a pet programme. It is an alternative for combining city walks with visits around São Miguel, once you have confirmed the hotel’s rules.

Plan your stay: When booking with your dog, give the pet’s details and check the supplement and permitted areas. You can then plan city walks and visits that include your dog.

Restaurants, shops and cafés: what Portuguese law says

Law No. 15/2018 allows pets inside enclosed premises when the operator permits them and places a visible sign at the entrance. The authorisation may cover the entire area intended for customers or just a duly marked part.

Animals cannot roam freely: they must be kept on a short lead or in a suitable carrier. They also cannot remain in service areas or near food displayed for sale. The establishment may refuse entry or require an animal to leave if its behaviour, health or hygiene disrupts normal operation.

Assistance dogs are covered by separate rules and should not be confused with pets. In practice, call or send a message before assuming you will be able to eat indoors; a terrace can also have its own rules.

Outdoor spaces, trails and beaches: check each case

Law No. 15/2018 regulates commercial establishments; it does not automatically make every trail, beach or protected area dog-friendly. In the Azores there are natural reserves, areas with livestock, nesting birds and access points governed by municipalities with specific rules.

Check the signs at the beginning of the route, keep the animal under control and always pick up after it. On beaches, confirm municipal and seasonal rules. Do not let the dog off the lead near livestock, cliffs, birds or other visitors, even when the path appears empty.

Travelling to the Azores with a dog: plan a few visits

Travelling to the Azores with your dog can be a wonderful experience, especially when your dog is part of the family holiday. Choosing pet-friendly local accommodation that clearly confirms its conditions gives you a more flexible base for planning each day.

Even so, some places — including outdoor sites — do not allow animals. The Pico Mountain access regulations bar access to anyone accompanied by a pet, while in designated bathing areas the maritime authority may prohibit animals from remaining or circulating, except guide dogs. Gardens, environmental centres and private attractions may also set their own rules. Before setting out, check the places planned for that day so there are no surprises.

If walking trails and dog-friendly routes in the Azores are your priority, there are plenty of days you can enjoy together. Check the signs and route rules, keep your dog under control and away from livestock and wildlife.

If a particular attraction does not accept dogs, leave yours at the accommodation only when the property expressly allows it, split the visit between your group, or book a reliable pet sitter or boarding service in advance. A pet-friendly local house or apartment may offer more flexibility than some hotels, but always confirm in writing whether your dog may be left alone. The aim is not to discourage a holiday in the Azores with your dog, but to avoid setbacks and keep the day comfortable for everyone.

Documents for travelling with a dog, cat or ferret

When entering Portugal from another European Union country, dogs, cats and ferrets must, as a rule, be microchipped, have a valid rabies vaccination and travel with a European pet passport. A first vaccination only becomes valid for travel after the applicable legal period. When travelling from outside the EU, a health certificate, document checks and, depending on the country, a serological test may be required.

For travel between mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Regions, the DGAV publishes its own requirements; a European pet passport is not required solely because this is a domestic journey. Still, the carrier may ask for additional documentation. Check the specific requirements with your vet and the airline.

Checklist before leaving

  • Readable microchip and updated associated contacts.
  • Pet health record, rabies vaccine and documents appropriate to the origin.
  • Carrier approved by the airline and familiar to the pet.
  • Enough medication, any required prescriptions and contact details for a clinic at your destination.
  • Short leash, water, bowl, waste bags, towel and a spare blanket for accommodation.

Interisland flights with SATA Air Açores and Azores Airlines

The official information from SATA sets out separate rules for animals travelling in the cabin and in the hold. In the cabin, the published limit is 8 kg including the container. Acceptance depends on the species, dimensions, weight and capacity of the aircraft; each passenger may carry one animal in a single cabin carrier.

Larger animals travel in the hold within the limits published by the airline, which may vary depending on the aircraft. The reservation must include species, breed, container dimensions and total weight, and is subject to confirmation. Animals under eight weeks old are not accepted and there are specific precautions for brachycephalic breeds.

Do not book a multi-leg itinerary without confirming each segment. If there is another carrier on the itinerary, that company's rules also apply.

How to organise day-to-day life with your pet

At the accommodation

Take a familiar blanket, protect sofas and beds when requested and do not leave the animal alone if the property prohibits it. Confirm in advance where you can wash paws and dispose of waste.

When travelling

Never leave the animal inside the car. Even in the mild oceanic climate, the car interior can heat up quickly. Plan stops, water, and a safe place to secure the container or harness.

At meals

Plan alternatives: a terrace that has confirmed it accepts pets, a takeaway meal or the option of cooking at your accommodation. Having a plan B avoids looking for a restaurant when the animal and the group are already tired.

FAQs about travelling with animals to the Azores

Are restaurants in the Azores required to accept dogs?

No. The establishment manager decides whether to authorise pets and must display this at the entrance. Assistance dogs follow their own rules.

How do I confirm whether a property accepts my dog?

Use the filter as a starting point, but ask for written confirmation about the size, number, supplement, deposit, permitted areas and the possibility of leaving it alone.

Can my pet travel in the SATA cabin?

It can, provided it meets the conditions and the published limit of 8 kg including the container. Transport must be requested in advance and confirmed by the airline.

Do I need a European pet passport between Lisbon and the Azores?

Not just because it is a domestic journey between mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Region. Check the DGAV requirements and additional documents requested by the airline.

Can I take the dog to any trail or beach?

This should not be assumed. Check signage, protected area rules and municipal or seasonal regulations, keeping the animal under control.

Is it better to choose a single island?

For animals that are not used to flying, reducing connections can greatly simplify the trip. If combining islands, confirm each segment and leave time between trips.
